Coaches-Lee-AnnGordon-CFLWRLee Ann – Lee Ann has always been active. Born in Flushings, New York, it wasn’t long before she surpassed her four brothers as the top athlete in the family. Excelling at tennis, volleyball, swimming, soccer, and basketball, she knew by freshman year of high school that she wanted to play either volleyball or basketball at the collegiate level.

Although Lee Ann did well in classes, receiving mostly A’s and B’s at the Mary Louis Academy in Queens, sports remained her true passion. She had established herself as one of the best high school volleyball and basketball players in the area, and soon faced a difficult decision. Eventually choosing to push ahead with basketball, feeling it gave her the best chance of getting a scholarship and maybe even one day playing professionally, she set her sights on Manhattan College. But it was a last minute visit to Division II C.W. Post that changed her mind. She fell in love with its beautiful campus and knew the Brookville, New York school was the one she wanted to attend. In the fall of 1993, she arrived on full scholarship with the plan to major in Physical Education.

At the start of her senior year at C.W. Post, Lee Ann realized that Physical Education wasn’t for her. Once again, her passion for fitness and sports beat out her interest in the classroom, and she made the switch to English—her strongest subject. It was also at this time that she met George, who would later become her husband. George, a soccer star at both Southern Connecticut University and C.W. Post, was still living near campus post-graduation. They quickly began dating and married two years later.

Now with two young children, Lee Ann, who always knew she wanted to end up in Florida, and George, packed up and moved to Bradenton in 2005. Despite the location change, fitness and athletics still dominated Lee Ann’s life. In only a few short years, she earned her ACE, AFAA Group Fitness, AFAA Kickboxing, TRX, and Mad Dogg Spinning certifications.

Lee Ann first heard about CrossFit a couple years ago, catching the CrossFit Games on television. Then, after a friend brought her and George to a class, she knew she had found her next challenge. She and George located the CrossFit gym nearest their home, which just happened to be the Lena Road property owned by Aaron and Alexis. Lee Ann finished the Elements class in February 2013, then continued as a member when Aaron and Alexis moved to the current Lakewood Ranch facility. By December, she had completed her CrossFit Level 1 certification, and after shadowing the CrossFit Lakewood Ranch trainers for about two months, she took over as a full-time instructor.

What Lee Ann loves most about CrossFit is being continually tested. The workouts constantly evolve, helping to prevent the lengthy plateaus common with other forms of training. Being a former member, she understands the important sense of community CrossFit creates, and has enjoyed watching CrossFit Lakewood Ranch grow into what it is today. Her goals are to keep learning, help others achieve new milestones, and get her next certification. She also continues to guide her daughters—Tyler, now 17 and having accepted a college soccer scholarship, and avid CrossFitter Dylan, 13—both in and out of the box.
